This 10 Days Rwanda Wildlife safari takes you Akagera national park for game watching and a boat trip to Lake Ihema, Nyugwe forest national park for canopy walk and chimpanzee tracking, Volcanoes national park for gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking experience, and other destinations.
Day 1: Kigali city tour – Transfer to Akagera national park
The driver guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali at around 9am and then start the trip with a city tour around Kigali and then visit the Kigali genocide museum. At the museum, you will learn about the genocide that happened in Rwanda where thousands of people lost their lives. Lunch will be at a restaurant in Kigali.
You start on the journey to Akagera National park and it takes about 2.5 hours depending on the stopovers along the way. If time allows you can do an evening game drive around the park.

Day 2: Game drive – boat cruise
Enjoy an early morning breakfast and start your game drives in an open roofed vehicle. A half day game drive here offers you an opportunity to spot a variety of game including elephants, buffalos, hippos, lions, Masai giraffe, gazelles, impala, baboons, oribi, Butchel’s zebra, topi, bush ba, leopard and bushbuck, etc.
Proceed for a boat trip after lunch on Lake Ihema, for a close encounter with the Crocodiles and Hippos along the river banks, coupled with large concentration of over 525 bird species both migratory and savanna related. Unique species such as Shoe billed stocks and papyrus gonolek can be encountered. Endemics include the jacanas, ibis, sand pipers and herons.

Day 3: Transfer to Nyanza
After breakfast at the lodge, check out and drive to Nyanza. As you drive you will have beautiful views of the surrounding highlands. The drive takes around 5-6 hours. Check in at Dayenu hotel where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 4: Visit the museum and palace
After breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to Nyanza place where you will visit the museum and the palace. The ancient palace has been reconstructed in Rukari and visitors can now explore the replica King’s , built using traditional materials and methods.
You will learn about the evolution of farming and building through the centuries, and then venture into the grounds to meet the long-horned cows, known as Inyambo. They’re beautiful to look at, with a stately elegance you don’t generally expect from cows, until you learn they’re part of the royal heritage, used in many important ceremonies. You can find out about the breeding techniques and listen to the amahamba songs the shepherds sing as part of the grooming process. Return to the hotel have lunch and relax.

Day 5: Transfer to Nyungwe – canopy walk
After breakfast at the hotel, checkout and drive to Nyungwe. Check in at the hotel in Nyungwe, relax and have lunch. In the afternoon, head off for a rewarding canopy walk that will expose you to a variety of species that dwell in this tropical rainforest national park. On a canopy walk, you will have the opportunity to catch a glimpse at different plants, colorful butterflies, birds a mention but a few. After, return to the lodge for relaxation.

Day 6: Chimp trekking – dinner and overnight in Nyungwe Forest
Get up early in the morning and enjoy your breakfast at your respective safari lodge. After, set off to Nyungwe Forest National Park headquarters to join other visitors for an early morning briefing on the set rules and regulations that you have to observe while on a search for chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
Chimpanzee treks in this park are always conducted in habituated groups and once you find these creatures, your opportunity to explore more about their behavior, body gestures and also a chance for you to take as many photos as possible. While on chimpanzee trek, you also have a chance to encounter other wildlife species including different primates including L’Hoest monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, Dent’s Mona monkeys, acrobatic Angola colobus, vervet monkeys, olive baboons as well as varied bird species that make up a total of 310 in this park including the long-tailed bluebird, paradise flycatcher, the Great blue turaco, forest hornbills, the orange and white bird among others. After return to the lodge for relaxation

Day 7: Transfer to volcanoes national park
After breakfast at the hotel, check out and transfer to volcanoes national park. This journey takes about 5-7 hours with a lunch stop over along the way. Later in the evening, you can visit the I’biwacyu cultural village. You will learn about the Rwandan culture and be entertained Rwandan dancers with their Kinyarwanda dance.

Day 8: Golden monkeys and transfer to Gisenyi
Drive to volcanoes national park headquarters after an early breakfast. Trekkers are expected to be there 7.30am. You will be briefed the park ranger guide about the activity and be put in groups of 8 and be assigned guides.
You will drive to the start of the trek and set out in to the forest to look for the monkeys. These monkeys are only found in the Virunga national park and parts of Kahuzi Biega National park. The activity takes about 3 hours, less or even more depending on where the golden monkeys are that day. You will expect to see the monkeys as they jump from one bamboo tree to another.
Return to the lodge, refresh, have lunch and check out. You will the drive to Gisenyi town which is at the border of Rwanda and D.R Congo (Goma).

Day 9: Relax at the hotel – boat cruise
Wake up to the beauty of Lake Kivu. Have breakfast and relax at the hotel. Later in the afternoon, do a relaxed boat cruise on Lake Kivu.

Day 10: Transfer back to Kigali
After a late breakfast at the hotel, check out and drive back to Kigali. You will do some souvenir shopping in the craft market in Kigali and then the driver will drop you at your hotel in Kigali or at Kigali international airport for your flight back home.
